[SOLVED] I like Linux but it doesn't like me

I use my Pc for writing music and wanted something that runs better than Vista. I've read that Linux is great for audio work.
I've tried a few distros, but two pieces of hardware (both USB) are not working - for instance my Speedtouch 330 (I know these are garbage but it was free) won't work in Ubuntu, where as my M-Audio Pre USB audio interface does. In PcLinuxOS, the modem works and the audio interface doesn't.

Having googled for answers I'm left with a bewildering array of options, all of which are way over my head as I know nothing about Linux. I bought a book about Linux which I'm ploughing through, but no way am I confident enough to know how to fix these issues.

I just want to get back to writing some tunes and sadly it looks like it's back to Windows, unless anyone knows of a Linux distro that supports both of the above? I don't like being a quitter and my impressions of both Ubuntu and PCLOS are good but I spent 2 days getting the modem working in PCLOS only to realise I can't get sound. I've got a Evolution midi keyboard as well, so I don't know if that would work either.

To be honest I'm pretty dumb and too used to plug and play stuff so I might have to uninstall Linux.

It might be helpful if you tell us what kind of computer you are using (preocessor, speed, RAM, etc). I use Ubuntu for music editing (Audacity) trouble-free on a Dell Dimension. But one distro or another may require a little more tweaking on certain computers.

I think Ubuntu would be the best bet. What do you have installed currently?

Open a terminal and post the output of
    Code:
    dmesg | grep firmware
More info on the speedtouch modem and ubuntu:

Once upon a time Ubuntu did not work with the Speedtouch 330 but now it does. Look at "UKSpeedtouchDSLHowTo" on

I started typing stuff into one of those consul things and realised I'm wasting my time, I need to get this crap off my Pc and put it down as a bad experience. I need computers to do what I want without writing a lot of mad **** iin I don't get.

I do appreciate your help, but Linux ain't for me.
