Any chess players here? I've played all my life. It's a great game.
I have a chess program that I have written in Sun java. It's one of those never ending projects. It's getting slowly stronger. There's nothing really Linux specific, though there are some server components to the project that live on my Linux server, such as saving games to mySQL, hosting the applet through apache. I have a lot of plans for expanding the site to include ePostal and live games. Mostly it's a learning project, I don't expect to compete with established gaming sites, but I do think I can interest people with special "niche" functionality, that other programs and websites don't offer.
Anyways, I could post a link to my own site if people want to check it out, it's really a long ways from prime time, but I don't want to come across as being a "self-promoter" especially on a forum where I'm new. I've managed to annoy a few mods on other forums with that sort of activity in the past. Not sure if it's an issue here?

Yes, it is a great game and I used to play regularly. In fact, I played often in US Chess Federation tournaments, and was a rated player, but I've not played competitively for a few years, now. Not sure if I'll ever play in rated events again.
Chess is the best board game ever devised, at least in my own opinion!

I agree, it can't be beat, chess will open doors for you in just about any country in the world.
I used to play in a lot of weekend tournaments, eventually it became too much of a pain, to devote your entire weekend to it. In addition to the time spent, there is entry fees, meals, gas, parking, it can get expensive if the budget is tight. And then you make a last minute blunder in the decisive game and you walk away angry,
Nowdays, I like ePostal, one move in three days like on gameknot.com. You can have several games going at once, and you just log in and make a move whenever it is convenient. The quality of the game is quite high cause you can take your time, and shuffle the pices around instead of doing it all in your head.

I also play in gameknot.com, but not too frequently.

I won college hostel chess tournament (received a "pen" as prize --though I was expecting much than a pen ) .
You know,Viswanathan Anand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia comes from this part of the planet
If you think, your program is stable and will help users/chess players ,then release it. (under open source licenseother forums with that sort of activity in the past. Not sure if it's an issue here?

Oh yes Anand is great player. Famous for his ability to play fast. The world situation is a little unclear, but as I understand Anand is the official World Champion.
My program is stable enough as far as it goes, but I don't think it is particularly useful to chess players cause it is not strong. There are already free programs that are much more useful. It is really just a hobby and a learning project for me, but I suppose it will be of interest to beginning/intermediate programmers who wish to be involved in such a project. I've already made several good contacts with programmers in other countries, and we share ideas.
