    Architecture: 32-bit vs 64-bit

Hey guys, just over a year ago, we ran a poll to measure the ratio of 32-bit users compared to 64-bit users under Linux. This new poll is meant to see how much the ratio might have changed.

Note that I'm not talking about what you have run in the past, but more about what you now use as your default Linux system. The 64-bit architecture has been around for quite some time and it continues to mature, but are people adopting it?

Please vote and let us know.

For those that don't really know much about it or what they are running but want to know more, you can check this thread for additional information:

Mostly I run 64-bit on my 8 core workstation, but I also run 32-bit systems on my 2 laptops.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Currently 32 bit but the next install may well be 64 bit
I need a new signature. This one is boring!

My blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

I have 4GB of RAM in both my laptop and desktop computers, and use 32-bit linuxes in both of them. Reason? Less compatibility issues, I suppose. The inability to address 1GB of that RAM is a non-issue. Nothing has yet convinced me that using a 64-bit linux is worthwhile (mostly because i'm too lazy to look into it).

I only find just about half a gig unaddressable (32-bit SuSE 11.1, 4GB RAM)

What confuses me is how the number that is addressable seems fluid, different with each boot. This one is showing 3.38 GB, I've had it show as high as 3.67.

Whatever, I have yet to run out on this computer.

Hope it works out well for you. I've been running 64-bit for the last 14 months without any issues at all, so it's doubtful that I'll ever revert.

I've been running 64-bit CentOS 5 for about 20 months now and have been very happy with it. I do run 32-bit Ubuntu 9.04 on my 2 laptops - one of them can run 64-bit, the other can only run 32-bit. I have found a few applications that run better on the CentOS system in 32-bit mode, such as Firefox (works better with flash videos than the 64-bit version), but most everything else is running 64-bit (audio, video, Open Office, Adobe, VirtualBox, application servers, database servers, et al). I wouldn't trade it for all the tea in China (or India).
