Just one more argument for keeping your data out of the cloud

    No Privacy

I will never put my documents in the cloud and I use ixquick or startpage what ever it's called for my searches. Google Mail is used only for crap.

As far as I can see, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Mom's Friendly Robot Company all have two things in common. Self Interest and the ability to quickly cave to legal pressure when it only involves their users privacy.

    Hi,

not that I am defending this buzzy thing branded "Cloud". In fact, I discourage using it for anything above storing food recipes, which ought to be shared anyway.

But I think the point you made does not exclusively apply to the Cloud, but should remind us to be sensible with all personal data. Everywhere.

I see your point Elijah, certainly I would not put legal/critical/incriminating stuff in the cloud, such as my list of crystal meth customers (just kidding).

But frankly I don't think Google or the FBI give a damn what I do, They have no reason to look at my stuff, and if they do, so what? Like I say if it's anything that can get me into trouble, then I'll keep it offline.

I have an idea. But it's not the how that I'm interested in, it's the why.

If you really think that Google set up the "cloud" for the purpose of spying on people and selling the information, then yeah, you will probably want to stay away. And stay away from their search engine too. And ask yourself why you should believe Ixquick's claims about privacy. Actually, you might want to take a close look at your Internet Service Provider also.

For that matter, I do not believe anyone's claims and this is why I suggest being responsible with what you give away.

Yup, I too have stopped using google for searches and I no longer use my gmail accounts. Ixquick is doing a pretty good job of searches, although it is slower, and I have a much better (in my opinion) webmail service now. I'm stirring clear of any clouds whenever I can!

OK so apparently you think that Google will spy on you because they can. because they can profit from it and have power. Well Ok I won't attempt to make a case against that. I can only think that you probably feel the same way about your ISP, and your bank, and that must really be a downer to think that people are watching your every move. And it must also limit you, not doing things because someone might know about it and sell the info.

I used to think that way, and went to extreme measures to protect myself from the possibility of all sorts of things. I eventually decided that most of it was more trouble than it was worth, but that's just me.

Anyways, I made my point, I think you made yours. It takes all kinds. I'm really not into a debate aout big brother or anything like that.

    regards.

Well they are certified by the EU and if you can't believe a bunch of unelected bureaucrats then who can you believe?

Just joking! They are verified by various sources
