    To Geek or Not to Geek, That is the Question!

    Hello everybody,

    Before I start, I would like to say thank you to all those who make linuxforums.org run as efficient and friendly as possible. Congratulations!

    In the early 80s, when my idea of a computer is a screen with green lettered lights and the most modern way I would send mails was by telex machines, there was this popular movie entitled "The Revenge of the Nerds". I enjoyed that movie since I saw the underdogs "nerds" win in the end using their knowledge of technology.

    What's the difference between a "nerd" and a "geek"?
    What separates the two? Is it like comparing oranges to apples? Or green to red apples?
    Should I put on a smile and feel a sense of accomplishment if someone starts to call me a geek?

    Personally, I don't mind what they call me. I enjoy learning linux and hope to make a clean living from this knowledge in the future. I want to share to others but at this point, I am not yet that well equipped. Maybe the best things I have learned in the past 6 months is on making fresh installations, partitions (gparted), and a little of wireless. Just enough knowledge to crank up a computer or a laptop.

    Thank you very much for your responses to this Thread!

    CHEERS!!! )

    Sure,you should . I have received a mail from annoyed giis user,(giis can't recover file ,deleted before it's installation )he deleted files and then installed giis to recover files.It throws up garbage ...he was very upset with me and my tool.
    and said "I don't know how hackers like you get busted" ..Though I felt pretty sad for him , but excited/thrilled to hear that he called me a "hacker"

    PS:Later I sent him a mail explaining the functionality of my tool and apologized for any inconvenice ...

    The first written use of nerd was in a poem by Dr. Seuss in 1950.

    Geek originally referred to a sideshow freak.
    geek: Definition from Answers.com

    In modern usage, they're fairly synonymous, but there seems to be a growing understanding that nerds are generally less accomplished than geeks. According to wikipedia, and I recall the episode, Richard Clarke on the Colbert Report said, "the difference between nerds and geeks is "geeks get it done."

    There is also a sense that geeks tend to be more focused on technology than nerds, so a person of above-average intelligence, with a focus on entomology say, would be a nerd, and with a focus on computer science would be a geek.

    My 2 cents.

    Nerds don't get girls either, geeks on the other hand......have at least moderate success. The way I like to think of it:
    Nerds=Ugly Geeks
    Geeks=Techno wiz

    I think I will enjoy being called a Geek afterall.

    Tsk. The terms aren't gender specific. Is the reverse true as well? Are nerdy girls less successful in romance than geeky girls?

    Wear your geekdom with pride - it's what distinguishes you from the hurd!

    I would think the fact that we're a finished product would distinguish us from the Hurd.
