"Barrelfish is a new research operating system being built from scratch in a collaboration between ETH Zurich in Switzerland and Microsoft Research Cambridge in the UK..."
Basically (if I read correctly), they're working on making a 'multikernel OS' where each core processing unit functions independently and "inter-core communication" is made explicitly.
I can see a number of ups and downs to this --I'm thinking something like a Beowulf or other clustering method, on a smaller scale. That said, I'm less inclined to think it's going to be a desktop OS anytime soon.
