    I just found this. It's BSD but I think it's interesting. I know I've got a much faster boot in Debian by customising and so far I don't think I've broken anything.

    As you said ... it's for BSD. I don't think the link between kernel and the rest of the OS is quite so tight with Linux ... The default for Gentoo, Crux and probably quite a few other distros is compile a custom kernel. Keeping an old kernel that you can boot the system in an emergency and a few strategic copies of .config at various stages should get you out of trouble ... with minimal effort
