Big News: nVidia to stop making chipsets

Day of chipset reckoning arrives for NVIDIA

NVIDIA dropped a bombshell today with an announcement that it is freezing development work on future PC chipsets. The GPU maker is blaming this dramatic move on an ongoing legal spat with Intel, but the market realities are there for all to see.

    More on it here.

Man! That's nuts! I'm at least encouraged by a small quote from the article where the lead corporate communications spokesman for Nvidia says:
So, until we resolve this matter in court next year, we'll postpone further chipset investments."
Hopefully it's not the end of the world for Nvidia....legal disputes can get out of hand in a hurry and I doubt Intel would show any mercy for Nvidia, they'd try to crush them like an empty beer can. I would not like it if we lost Nvidia chipsets that's for sure, my whole mother board is Nvidia.

This isn't good. I like nVidia and would like to see them around a lot longer.

    Just a rumour

    From Tom's Hardware
We've received a number of inquiries recently about NVIDIA's chipset (MCP) business. We'd like to set the record straight on current and future NVIDIA chipset activity.

On Intel platforms, the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M/ION brands have enjoyed significant sales, as well as critical success. Customers including Apple, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, ASUS and others are continuing to incorporate GeForce 9400M and ION products in their current designs. There are many customers that have plans to use ION or GeForce 9400M chipsets for upcoming designs, as well.

I've been using nothing but nVidia cards since I was but a wee lad using daddy's windows 98. This royally sucks. If Intel forces nVidia to go under, I am going to seriously reconsider making a switch next time I upgrade.

It looks like nvidia is trying to choke Intel. ATI will be making a lot of money in nVidia's absence, making money for AMD. They are banking that Intel will cut their losses and drop the suit. What I am worried will happen is that Intel may decide to start making their own graphics chips and screw nVidia for this. Very interesting to say the least.

I'd never buy anything AMD have its fingers in it. They should develop hair cutters instead of being involved into PC world. I had only once an ATI card, but never more again. I hope this news is only a duck!

..or force nVidia under, BUY THEIR IP, then start integrating the superior nVidia technology into Intel chips...

The nVidia chipsets in question aren't their video chip sets, but only their motherboard chipsets. Intel is making it much more difficult to integrate with their new generation(s) of processors and memory bus architectures, and it is no longer cost-effective for nVidia to compete with Intel in the motherboard chipset market (unfortunately).
