[SOLVED] Hello I'm New; Which Version?

Hi I am new to Linux, and Greetings to everybody!

I have Vista 64 and want to dual boot with linux. I was looking at mandriva linux 64. I don't really know what linux can do and want to dual boot it so I can learn about it.

Does anyone have any recommendation of which to use?

There are many great versions of Linux. As a new user though I personally would recommend Ubuntu for its ease of use and great support community, also it uses apt-get to search for the dependencies you need when installing software.

As you progress you may want to try other flavors. One day you may even have a weekend free and wish to try installing Gentoo... Using that distro you will end up learning allot.

If you new to Linux then "Welcome" and I would recommend Mandriva/Gnome...
    Make mine Arch Linux

    Welcome to the forums!

Mandriva/Mandrake has always been considered one of several good starting places for new Linux users.

Hope it works out well for you.

i started off with red hat 9 (it used to be free back then )

but in terms of user friendliness, i think ubuntu is the thing. esp the reviews for the oct 09 release (9.10) are very good.
