bulk e-mail programme suggestion

I am still a newbie to linux/Ubuntu but perhaps someone could recomend some software for sending bulk e-mails for marketing.

We are talking of a few thousand names here not five million and it is not spam - I still have 500 boxes of viagra to use from last year and I must remeber to give all my bank details to some nice chap in Nigeria as he has promised to send me a cheque afterwards for 1.5 million..........

I have done the googling bit and also researched outside mailing houses but wondered if anyone on the forum has any experience of e-mailing and what software they used. It would be nice to try it out with Ubuntu rather than falling back on windows as usual.
