I've got a lot of catching up to do!
Hello!
I haven't run Linux in years, but here I am! Ubuntu 9.10 on an old Dell Inspiron 1100. I really expected to have more problems than I have. It's a testament to the dedication of the development community!
The wireless setup was a 3itcH, but was a great opportunity to get back under the hood again after all this time. Gotta go, so many How-To's, so little time!

You got an 1100 to run 9.10 without major issues? That's a testiment right there. I had SLED 10/KDE on mine before it died (actually, it still works, but the HDD is pretty toasted and it doesn't charge any more), wireless actually worked right away (I must have been using a different card than you); the only problem I had with it was a tendency to enter swap hell rather easily (I really had to mind what apps I had open).
Good job. Welcome back!

Yes, other than the wireless it went pretty well. It dual boots XP SP3. Interesting thing on the wireless, I am using an Orinoco based PC Card. After messing with it over a period of two days I found that the wireless would work when I booted into a root shell (with networking), but not once the desktop loaded. A few searches confirmed my idea that NetworkManager was the culprit.
I ran startx from the propmt, and was able to use the package manager to "upgrade" to WICD and all is good.
I agree with the swap issue. This PC is just a test. I have another Dell that has a P4M and a gig of ram. I think that should spank this Distro into submission!

Huh. It is the same card. SLED10 used kInternet for network connection, perhaps that's why it worked without issue. After that, I started to seriously dislike NetworkManager... mainly because you do have to run it with su privs or you get nowhere.

This sounds very strange. Are you talking about the front-end control applet? NetworkManager itself is a system service and should run as root anyway. After that, I started to seriously dislike NetworkManager... mainly because you do have to run it with su privs or you get nowhere.

Yes, I was referring to the applet.

Lattitude is up now!
Sorry for not updating this sooner. I loaded onto the laptop I mentioned and it rocks. I've been playing a bit which explains the delay!
I was able to use the 1100 with iptables to get this one online (just cuz I wanted to) and load from there. Some wireless issues associated with a driver conflict, but I was able to resolve it on my own!
Cheers!
