    Smile Remember this?

Who remembers those text-based games, where you would picture the room with your mind and enter 'commands' to further your own epic adventure?

    I'll use an example:
You wake up to find yourself in an old dungeon. To the NORTH, you see a skeleton chained to the wall with a KEY in it's maw. To the EAST, you see a CANTEEN lying on the ground. To the SOUTH, you see a barred window. To the WEST, there is a DOOR.

    This jogging anyone's memory?

I've always enjoyed these because they allow you to use your imagination to write your own Odyssey and use the logic portion of your brain to solve complex puzzles. Always good fun!

I started playing these with Adventureland on the Vic 20 and then went on to play and complete Pirate Adventure, Voodo Castle and the Count all by Scott Adams.

    I don't think he's that Scott Adams

One of the all time greats was Leather Goddesses of Phobos, a game which lead to the legendary exchange (when encountering a from wearing a crown)

    > Kiss the frog
You bend down to kiss the frog but the sight of it's warty face disgusts you.

    > Close eyes and kiss frog
You close your eyes and bend down to kiss frog but it's horrific odour makes you gag.

    > Hold nose, close eyes and kiss frog
You hold your nose, close your eyes and bend down to kiss frog but it lets out a loud ribbet making you open your eyes catching sight of it's warty face!

-- SNIP SEVERAL MORE ATTEMPTS --

    > Oh **** the frog!
Not in my game you pan-sexual pervert!

Honestly, I fell off the chair laughing!

I applaud him for his boldness. It was only back then that you could accuse someone of practicing beastiality without having anally retentative groups such as the FCC and overbearing mothers breathing down your neck. Steve Meretzky deserves this:

Some of these games still ship with Linux by default.
    In Ubuntu:

    rcgreen@blue:~$ adventure

Welcome to Adventure!! Would you like instructions?
    y

Somewhere nearby is Colossal Cave, where others have found fortunes in
treasure and gold, though it is rumored that some who enter are never
seen again. Magic is said to work in the cave. I will be your eyes
and hands. Direct me with commands of 1 or 2 words. I should warn
you that I look at only the first five letters of each word, so you'll
have to enter "northeast" as "ne" to distinguish it from "north".
(Should you get stuck, type "help" for some general hints. For
information on how to end your adventure, etc., type "info".)

This program was originally developed by Will Crowther. Most of the
features of the current program were added by Don Woods. Address
complaints about the UNIX version to Jim Gillogly (jim@rand.org).

You are standing at the end of a road before a small brick building.
Around you is a forest. A small stream flows out of the building and
    down a gully.
    Love it!

I'm surprised about that little tidbit of information! I didn't know Linux had it's very own Text-Based Adventure Game! Most people consider them old and not many play them unless self-mutilation is the only thing they have left to do for fun. Even then they'll still stab something when they can't figure out how to pick up STRANGE OBJECT.

Ah Colossal Cave. The original adventure game!

First completed this in the mid 80's and it was originally written by one of my heroes! Willie Crowther, the man who also write the code for the original IMPs.

You give the kids of today something like this and they will look at you like you are stupid. It was a great time back then.
