Actually, Xerox PARC developed the first GUI display technologies with the Xerox Star system. Because they didn't patent the technology, it gave Sun and Apple and later Microsoft the ability to use the concepts they innovated to provide us the rich computer display systems we take for granted today. However, given how clueless the USPTO seems to be, I think it is entirely possible for someone with very deep pockets to come along and patent a lot of this stuff, prior art notwithstanding.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Ah yes where would we be without PARC?
There was developed (among many oher things)
The bitmapped display (before that it was line editing - ed anyone?)
The computer mouse
Ethernet
The GUI
Laser Printers
The "personal" computer
In the late sixites and early seventies PARC was a collection of the best technology brains in the world and given what they produced it is stunning that there was so few of them.

Microsoft are evil. But that is the way the market/liberal/capitalism works. It you invent something these days you need to paitent it. Even if it is open source software. I believe there is an open source register out there somewhere, that should offer some legal protection. If not than there damn well should be.
