    Microsoft patents "sudo"

Yep, despite the fact sudo has been in use on 'nix systems for almost thirty years, and that ms had nothing to do with it's 'invention' or creation, they've patented it as their own.

More detail, and some general evidence to the stupidity of it all at:

Wow. Those three letters severely understate the thoughts i have, but, wow. They take credit for an idea that existed before their OS, that they don't even use. From the trademarking of Linux by some dude in the nineties, to this, things are getting out of hand!

From the history of sudo, it's clear that the real inventors were at SUNY/Buffao - surely that means they can not only overturn the patent based on their own prior invention, but can sue the arse off Microsoft for a chunk of their cash?

What a hot crock of pooh!
I think prior art will take care of this........if MS ever tries to sue anyone for using it.

Well, there's nothing new here! DOS was basically a clone of CP/M, and Windows 95 had the Mac user interface lifted whole, complete with trashcan. And I believe Windows networking came from BSD. Those people have always been gonofs.

Perhaps we'll see some litigation between Todd Miller and Microsoft:

    Sudo License

It appears that Miller first copyrighted Sudo in 1987, but then again I'm not sure how much any of it really matters.

I'd be extremely surprised if this patent makes it through, and even if it does there are beaucoup examples out there that would give anyone legal grounds to contest it.

I just can't imagine what the honchos at Microsoft must be thinking. Patent sudo? Why would they even bother? Surely they can see that the downside to this exceeds the benefits.
