    System Requirements

First off, what are the system requirements to run KDE (more importantly, how much memory will it take up)?

Second, how much memory would a very light virtual machine running XP take up?

The reason I ask is because if I can run KDE easily on my computer as well as a virtual machine, I'll be making the switch soon.

Most distros using KDE recommend at least 512MB RAM.

XP is old. MS recommends 128MB+ RAM.

With KDE 3.5 you can get away with 256 with sufficient swap space, but that'll be slow going. You really want the 512 physical RAM.

Plus, you'll want to add any additional RAM your VM will use to your physical minimum. In your case, I'd say that totals 768MB bare minimum, 1+GB recommended.

You can do it on less, but be warned that there are few things that can make your machine less responsive than swap hell without locking it up solid.

XP w/ 128mb or even 256mb is a dog! Just the basic OS with very little in the way of services running will take almost 200mb, not including any applications. So, 512mb with XP is somewhat usable, whereas 512mb for Linux w/ kde is quite usable and 256mb is tolerable.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

In my experience 256MB is a lot better than tolerable if you use a simple window manager to manage your desktop.

IceWM runs most apps very smooth with only 128 MB. It's supposedly tolerable on 64 MB... haven't tried it but I believe it. I believe other light Window Managers will function similarly. I just didn't mention it prior since the original question is about KDE + a VM.
