    Never heard any such thing.

Dropping support for an important interface such as OpenGL is suicide for any manufacturer of graphics accelerators.

Where did you hear this rumor? I can't find any press releases about it. In fact, I'm finding press releases that say quite the opposite:

Latest ATI Linux Video Driver Introduces Full OpenGL 3.0 Support - Also includes support for Ubuntu 8.10, Hybrid CrossFire and Multiview - Softpedia

If ATI planned to drop OpenGL entirely, why spend so much time and effort bringing support for OpenGL 3.0 to Linux?

OpenGL is the basis of all non windows (and some windows) game graphics, ATI would be the one to hurt if they stopped supporting opengl.
