    At first we thought this 18 button mouse was an amusing Photoshop job, perhaps poking fun at OpenOffice or complicated to use peripherals. But in fact this is an actual device being marketed as the "first multi-button application mouse designed for OpenOffice users. No really! We're torn between being both entranced and horrified all at once looking at this mouse.

    Imagine a keyboard, Xbox 360 controller and a standard mouse getting it on and having a love child and what the results may be something like the OpenOfficeMouse. The 18 buttons dotting the top of the mouse can support as many as 52 key commands, the design incorporates an analog joystick on the side, and also includes default profiles for the "five core OpenOffice.org applications based on 662 million datapoints compiled by the usage tracking facility incorporated into OpenOffice.org 3.1".

    Does this really result in a more effective workflow? Damn if we know, we don't use OpenOffice nor this mouse to vouch for it, so we'd love to hear back from an OpenOffice users if they're tempted to by the notion of working with something as complicated as this device appears to be. There's a temptation to say hell with simplicity and immerse ourselves in the complexity and options heaven of such a device.

    Sex it up with some fake metal and name it something like "The Annihilator 3000" and you've got yourself a pretty nifty gaming mouse.

    Whatever happened to KISS?

    Actually this thing reminded me of something I once read about called a chord keyboard. It was a mouse-sized button pad that you held in your hand and you pressed different combinations of buttons to get all the characters on a normal 105-key board. I wonder what happened to those...

    18 button for OOo I can understand, but for gaming?

    [left-click] = Fire weapon . and ... ehm ... [left-click] = Fire weapon again

    Did I miss something?

    Yeah, you missed something. Call of duty and other RPG/FPS have multiple functions that can be programmed to your liking.
    Button 1 could be fire button,
    Button 2 could be run like hell
    Button 3 could be toss a Grenade
    and so on....you might be surprised at how efficient you could be at gaming with this kind of equipment.

    Yeah, you've missed something. A whole genre of gaming.

    In WoW, I've mapped most of my heals to my mouse buttons(7 of them) and mapped the remaining to the keyboard.
