Open Source Solutions
I'm a supporter of open source stuff in general. I'd like to know what some of your favorite solutions are for basic problem. Linux obviously for the operating system. But then what? I know I like abiword. Firefox is beastly. But the other things seems a lot more muddled about what's good, and what's difficult. BTW. I am not tech savvy, just a person who believes in freedom.

Open Office, obviously.
Then there's `free' file-format standards like OGG for media files, or PNG for images... I don't know much either.
Open source hardware? No idea how easily one can find that.
You can also visit Richard Stallman's Personal Page every once and then and look out for petitions to sign. :P

For basic tasks I mostly use the standard applications, because I prefer visual integrity over feature-richness. As I use GNOME, that would be programs like Evolution, GEdit, Inkscape, GIMP, Totem and GNOME Terminal.
When I have to work in a KDE environment, I use KMail, Kate, Konsole,.. instead.
Not sure if the original question was about that too, but as far as hardware is concerned, I am a conscious buyer of hardware which has both capable free software drivers and programming specifications available. This provides me with the joyful situation that everything just works without me being constrained.Debian GNU/Linux -- You know you want it.

I don't like Abiword. What's the use of a word processor that doesn't give you intelligent quotes?

There are too many great apps to list them all here, but you can find some opensource options that you might like here:
