About virtual desktop
Hi folks,
Recently I came across the term "Virtual Desktop" frequently.
Is "Virtual Desktop"="thin client"?
Is it only the fancy name created by some company on marketing?
I ran "thin client" >10 years ago when the hardware was very expensive. I made of use 486 PCs running "thin client". Data can be saved on server or locally.
Please shed me some light. TIA

These days, a Linux virtual desktop is generally an x-server running without an attached display (virtual display) that can be accessed via a remote "thin" (or otherwise) VNC client (typically).
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Hi Rubberman,
Thanks for your advice.
The principle looks to me the same as thin client which I ran >10 years ago. The server is headless forwarding X to thin clients. But I can't recall exactly whether at that time I ran headless server config via a local desktop.
Previously some software companies marketed thin clients without success. Now they changed a fancy name, virtual desktop, with some features added, such as rotation desktop, which was first developed by MAC also >10 years ago.
