This might sound like a paradox, but to be able to successfully build your own distro you need to have a deep understanding of how Linux functions. When you know that then you will be in a position to build a distribution.
There are very important elements that you would have to consider. For example, there is no menu for what a Linux distribution consists of beyond the kernel itself. The rest is up to you. It's a matter of understanding what you need, why you need it and how to do so most efficiently.
I recommend starting off with Gentoo or the Linux From Scratch project. Both essentially let you customise to a ridiculous level and it will be a sharp learning curve. Actually, Linux from scratch is really a guide in building letting you make your decisions and mistakes on the way. That'd probably be the best way to start.

Another thing to consider strongly is the reasoning for building yet another Linux distribution. If your new Linux distribution will offer something truly unique so that it stands out from all the others, it might be well worth the effort. If it turns out to be just another distro like the hundreds of distributions already out there, it might very well get lost in the mix.
Some time spent sampling a few of the already existing distros, along with some heavy-duty build experience with something like Linux From Scratch (as suggested above by BigTomRodney) should prove to be very valuable to your effort.
Best of luck with it whichever route you take!
