    Smile Sending SMS messages via Konsole!

    This is so cool! I was reading about sending messages to cell phones for free via email so I figured this would work in a terminal with an SMTP running and a mail program. I'm using postfix and mutt. I know I can do this without the mail server but it's cooler coming from my own machine

    If anyone wants to try:

    To start postfix type "postfix start"

    Then type "mutt", if you don't have mutt use another mail program or download it, I get my stuff with zypper.

    Check the list of carriers' SMS gateways on wikipedia: List of carriers providing SMS transit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    then send the message to for example, a verizon number: 5555555555@vtext.com

    This was more for noobies, I'm sure a lot of people here already knew about this, but I just found out and I'm excited.

    What would be better is if I can send an SMS without knowing the carrier. there are programs for that in windows, but I wanna do that in the console.

    Hello ;

    I am currently working with a wireless operator in Canada, I am particularly in the SMS and other services region and I can assure you that the Email to SMS link is deactivated.
    Most operators will soon deactivate that aswell. If you see a Gateway it will not nessecary mean that it is active as the gateway is also used for sms to email functionality which is always active.

    * why operators deactivate Email to SMS ?
    usually it is a security concern, as we all have a problem with spammed email inbox. we wouldn't like to see spam on our phones aswell.

    I tried Virgin mobile, T-mobile, and ATT and they all worked. My friend in the UK said they're all deactivated there like you said about Canada. I'm in the U.S.

    Once US operators receive a major Spam-Attack they will surely shut down the Email to SMS link and will only allow SMS to EMAIL .
    It's only a matter of time, unless they somehow find a way to verify the email address of the sender to ensure security .
