    Aspiring Linux Sysadmin

    Hello,

Currently I am teaching myself the ins and outs of Linux. My hope is to learn enough to become Linux Certified.

I would love to go to school and learn this but that isn't feasible due to cost of school and needing to have a full time job. I am 20 yrs old, rather computer savvy to begin with.

I am wondering what steps to take to reach my end goal of a sysadmin with minimal formal schooling. Any good online tutorials/classes for relatively cheap or good books I can buy to learn from. I currently am plugging my way through the 2008 Linux Bible as a friend of mine had it laying around.

Any points in the right direction would be great. Until then I will continue reading and working through my current text.

    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forums!

Most of the Linux books put out by O'Reilly are very good, but some are rather expensive and they all become somewhat outdated fairly quickly. You can check their website for some system administration volumes that might interest you. If you should decide to buy, take a look around online for better pricing. You can also find lots of free ebooks online with a little google searching.

One of the best ways to learn about Linux is to jump right in, install a few distros, and start digging down to the core to see what it's all about and how it works.

Hope you'll have fun continuing to learn and use Linux.

Be Careful What You Wish For . . . .

    Hello Aspiring Linux Admin

Competition is tougher out there these days.

Interest and sincerity is usually rewarded.

Years ago, about your age, while working full time, I wanted to work for a particular networking R&D company. I approached HR, said I'd put a few free hours in for them here and there, for free, that didn't get me too far.

I looked up some names in engineering wrote them letters, was brought in for a few hours on weekends and made a rewarding 20 year career out of it.

    And My Point?

    Oh yeah . . .

If you are able to get in a Linux environment, experience is vital, and your certified friends will have up to date input on the certification process.
