I don't consider that sad, really. It's human nature. Later on in that article you linked they mention that even when people do listen to alternative viewpoints they only very rarely change their pre-established beliefs. If (and I'm trying to stay out of politics here) I disagree with a particular thing an entity or corporation does or says, reading an article defending said thing won't likely change my mind, only bolster my own mental "case" against them.
I don't watch the news at all. Ever. I don't read newspapers or listen to news radio. I find that there's an awful lot less to be freaked out about that way.

I like the Mark Twain quote, TechieMoe. We don't have cable or broadcast TV reception, and we only get the Sunday paper, mostly for the comics and local sales advertising. The rest of it is a waste of time, paper, and ink...

I'd tell you what's going on, but I wouldn't want to ruin your day.

Anyways, there's something to be said for your approach, I've certainly had times when I've done it your way. But I wouldn't want to be completely in the dark. Some events can directly influence your well being, and you need to know about them somehow, no?

Me either techieMoe. I used to be a huge news junkie until it occurred to me that most of the news outlets make their living by bringing you other people's misery. Watching what they presented was having a real negative impact on my psyche and I really need to be at my best for my family. So, about four years ago, I decided to stop watching and reading it all together. I figured if something was important enough that I should know, someone would tell me. So far this has worked out. I've been in a much better frame of mind and have focused my sympathies and concerns locally where I at least have a chance to do something positive.

I don't either. My wife will read up on events on BBC.com, and will tell me about some of the stories that really stuck in her memory. Some of them are even heart-warming!
But as far as I'm concerned, I'm with you and Dan on this. If I need to know that badly, somebody will let me know!
P.S., love the quote!

A person's life is certainly more serene by not being concerned with or interested in things that they have absolutely no control over. I found an article today about the news: The Creed of Objectivity Killed the News
