Just back the foot out slowly and things will be fine

I have gone with the Debian and it seems fine. Just got to figure out how to shutdown without needing root. Going to try adding my user name to /etc/shutdown.allow.

Having a cli environment on an eeepc 701 is quite a geek magnet
