Open Source Apps
Hey, everybody
As open-source users or enthusiasts, what, would you say, are essential open source apps to have on a distro, apps that you need, apps that you want, apps that make things run easier.
I want to start a site offering all of the best open-source apps, so I figure that you guys would know what basic needs are, and what apps you all think are essential.
Thanks

the problem with the question is that everyone is different, not just in what type of apps are needed, but what app they will use that is functionaly the same as another.
vi, emacs, nano, gedit, kate -- all are plain text editors, all do basicaly the same thing, and all of them have their own following.
OpenOffice writer, abiword, .... whatever KDE uses, all of them are the same thing again, but have different users who like them.
the other thing is that I'm not sure there is a need for a website like what you are proposing. There allready exists sites like that for windows (finding open source apps to run on windows that is,) and most linux distrobutions contain package managers that will install all the software a basic user will need. And if you need an app not in the package manager, odds are that you have exceeded what a normal user finds essential.New to the internet, technical forums, or the hacker / open source community??

I have to pretty much agree with the above poster, because words like essential and best throw your query into an endless loop since everyone has different requirements and tastes. The only way you would be able to cover your objective as stated above is to include all open source applications in your database. You can check out linuxappfinder.com for some ideas on how you might want to proceed.

You seem to have mis-understood, or I didn't say it right.
I don't want everyone saying that an app for everyone is impossible, or what's wrong with it, or how wide and broad a question it is.
I would like each user, as an individual, to say what app the use the m,ost, or they like the most.
Thanks, and sorry for the confusion

So you want us all to tell you which applications we like? For what reason?

For the reasons stated in the first post

I think you're entering an already saturated market. Most distributions include commonly used applications and everything else is usually found in their repositories as mentioned in previous posts
Maybe other sites such as Source Forge have a list of most popular downloads but with so many other sites already doing what you're proposing what is going to make people come to your site?Linux User #453176

Here's a listing of some major Linux apps:
popular Linux applications, by The Linux Information Project (LINFO)
I've used most of them at one time or another but try not to keep lots of extra or unnecessary apps on my computer these days.oz
