Hazel, what is the router you have? It should be possible for you to configure it to automatically obtain a new dhcp address from your ISP....

Also, FWIW, I have updated the firmware on any number of my routers in the past without problems. Do check to see if you need to do that.

is it your router or did your ISP furnish it? if its theirs, what the harm if you accidentally brick it

It's an SMC Barricade and it belongs to me, not my ISP. I went to the SMC site and there's a whole string of firmware releases listed for this model and part number. I've downloaded the latest one, which came out in January last year but I'm not going to do anything with it until I'm certain that it's safe. As to configuration, I'm still using the factory defaults for most of that. My motto is "Don't mess with things you don't understand.
