Making the switch
After years of idle interest in Linux systems I finally am making the switch (To Mint I think) with a new computer I'll be building soon. What made me make up my mind was looking at the new Windows.
Vista is hideously bloated and Windows 7 is no better. I just don't see why an operating system needs 2 gig of RAM to run or why it ever should!
Another thing that bothered me was the quick release of a brand new operating system right after Vista. What's to say that within 3 years the expensive Windows 7 won't be outdated with a new, even more expensive, clunker marked "buy me" being toted by Microsoft?
The final straws came down to the OS itself. You now have to buy basic utilities like Office separately and Windows 7 Itself is now unlockware. "Automatic upgrade" my butt- You are buying part of an operating system with the rest locked until you pay more.
So, what made you decide to switch? What was your first Linux/Unix?

I tried Linux out of curiosity only. I don't have any problem with Windows XP ( I haven't used Vista/Windows 7 much) and still Linux/XP dual booting in a few machines.
Linux is my main OS these days and Windows XP is for a very few things only.
My first distro was Fedora Core 5.It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

It was the Windows Genuine Advantage thingy that made me asking who should have control over my computers. The answer was "me", the solution was "free software", and "GNU/Linux" was the most potent I found

Pure curiosity and I tried Mandrake 9.0. It wasn't love at first sight
But I was fascinated by the concept so I kept coming back and trying again and at some point I realised I hadn't used Windows in 8 months.
That was a few years ago and I haven't looked back

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
