Ubuntu runs brilliantly on my Toshiba Satellite straight after install so you should be able to get it going.
You've come to a great place for help anyway. If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)
My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

I got my wife a Toshiba netbook for her b'day and it runs Linux just fine. She tried the Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix - no problems (other than not liking it), Ubuntu 9.10 standard - no problems, and for work Scientific Linux (RHEL 5.4 w/ tweaks to Kerberos & Andrew File System stuff) - also with no problems. All the wireless and other cruft work just fine. She's using Scientific Linux now - no dual booting or anything.
So, what model Toshiba do you have, how much RAM + disc, etc. and which distributions+version of Linux did you try?Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

Model A505 6009
It has 400 ram 500 hard drive i have been trying to get ubuntu on there. I am a computer science student, just started, and my teacher said that ubuntu would be great for me have and learn to use. I just don't know what to do. Ubuntu doesn't seem to want to work and i am tired of the virtual box.

First, download to your Windows system a number of Linux liveCD's such as Ubuntu, Fedora, etc. Then, burn them to a CD and run them directly on your hardware instead of in a virtual machine. Find one that works for you and install it directly in a separate partition (you should have room w/ a 500GB disc). You may need to shrink your Windows partition to do that, but there are tools to help do that.
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
