I'm not sure what the biggest is, as that could change from one day to the next, but I do routinely see 2TB drives here in the USA. I feel sure that's not the biggest, though.

Oops... just reread your post. My comment was actually based on internal drives, so I'm not sure about ready to go externals.

For external drives, I prefer to buy external enclosures then put the internal drives of my choice into them. You just have to make sure before purchase that the two are items are fully compatible.

Thanks for pointing that out. It slipped my attention because I didn't expect anything to change before 1000th.

This is what I had in mind; the biggest external drive available is the same as the biggest internal drive

Right... according to this wikipedia page, the current largest internal is still at 2TB, but I'm betting there is a bigger one that could be found in a hard drive manufacturer's lab somewhere around the world.

Yeah. I think 2TB is about the biggest bare drive available right now. I would not be surprised to see 3TB ones out PDQ - like in the next year. Anyway, 2TB bare drives at Buy.com are running between $160-175 USD (US shipping included) right now. A 1.5TB drive is about $110.

I'm anxious to see how big the solid state drives will become once they really take off and the technology is perfected so that they can be made bigger and better, and they aren't so expensive. My guess is that it won't be long before they are hundreds of terabytes in size.
