Debating on which OS is better is just a wastage of time.
I believe whatever OS works for me and do the things in my way, is best for me.

I would suggest you to give Linux OS a try and find out yourself. If it doesn't work for you, stick with any other OS of your choice. If you are planning to use Linux, try LiveCDs. We will be glad to help you all the way.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

That is a oversimplification of the mentioned reasons.

For me, it depends on the usecase.

If you want to play the newest games, use windows.
If you are in a 100% windows environment on your workplace, use windows.

If you want complete control, what is happening why in your serverfarm and maybe you have to fullfill some custom requirements use a unix.

I happen to have experience in both worlds in a 500+ serverfarm.
And -for me- working with unix is more straightforward and focused on the actual technical problem.
    ie:
    - licences
    - different feature versions of the same product
    - dealing with prices
    - communicating with support hotlines why (and that) their product has a bug
    dont get in the way
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
