In your opinions, what is the most important things you should remember about Linux?

That it isn't Windows. That may sound simplistic but this is very hard for many people to grasp. You drill it into them and two days later they get frustrated because they can't install an .exe.

Do you think Linux is better than Windows?
- 04-09-2010 #4
It all depends on what you are wanting to do and everyone has their own opinion. For some, Windows is adequate for their needs. For others it is not. I prefer Linux because it gives me a wider range of options in my work. I also like the fact that Linux is robust, secure and truly a multi-user operating system. On top of all that, it's just plain fun and interesting to use if you love working with computers.

The real question should be: Is Linux better than Windows for me?
If that's the case, then yes.
It gives a far wider range of options as far as looks and feel. Software preferences, as far as what you, as the user, want to include on your system.
Linux is better for me. You have to decide whether or not it's better for you.

Is Linux better than Windows? I think the answer depends a lot on what you value most. I'm a nervous old woman and I value safety more than most people do. I never felt safe on the Internet when I used Windows. Of course I had a firewall and anti-virus but the fact that I had to update them every time I went online just underlined how dangerous things were out there. It's a huge relief knowing that all that malware was written for Windows and won't run on my Linux box.
I also value stability; system crashes make me panic. Linux doesn't ever give you the blue screen of death. And I like to understand how my system works; that also makes me feel safer and more ready to trust the software. No-one really understands how Windows works except Microsoft engineers!
You'll find too that many Linux users have ethical reasons for preferring free software to the proprietary kind. Certainly that was what first led me to want to try Linux.
On the other hand, there are loads of Windows users out there who don't seem to care at all about any of those things so it's questionable whether Linux would really be better for them."I'm just a little old lady; don't try to dazzle me with jargon!"

as a tech I use linux more profusely on my own systems because the os has a lot more flexibility for the extensive work I do and far more secure
I have to use winhosed at work and I make sure they know the displeasure I hold for windows.
I am repeatedly having to rebuild their systems due to numerous virus infusions in the network and user goof-ups in the system files.
not to mention having to pound the idea of backing up their data into their heads with a jackhammer.
although I did like the feature in ms office of frequent prompt to save your data.
this saved a lot of work.
