    My Paypal Warning Notification

I received an email from abbey@abbey.co.uk requesting that I take ten minutes to up date my paypal account information using the link at the bottom of the email.

I was also informed that " failure to update your records will result in account suspension. " Please update your records before May 10, 2010.

Once you have updated your account records, your PayPal account activity will not be interrupted and will continue as normal.

If I have learned anything as a LF member it is that Internet Fraud is a major Criminal Activity. It makes me wonder how many innocent people are going to be robbed through this email.

These kind of phishing attacks are very, very common these days. We keep telling people to NEVER use a link in one of the emails to change their account information, as they are usually going to rip them off! Most decent spam/trojan scanners will catch this stuff. I know that my gmail filters work pretty well with these sort of scams, and when I look at the message in the spam box, google has a great big red banner wanring about the message and they disable the links as a result.

Right... I wouldn't click on that link if they paid me to click it.

You might want to report this to the real PayPal folks and send them a copy of the email so that they can investigate.

I always take some time to investigate any links that come in with unsolicited emails and doing so has paid off more than a few times in the past. Glad you didn't fall for it but reported it instead.

Paypal has its own spoof-reporting address as do some banks. People in the UK who get a phishing email apparently from a bank, and who don't have a spoof-reporting address for that bank, should forward it to reports@banksafeonline.org.uk which is an inter-bank organisation set up to deal with this sort of thing. Their website is worth visiting too. Don't forget to include all the headers - paste them in if necessary. They will be needed to track down the source of the spam.

What the Internet needs is a diligent Posse that will trace and track down these predators and beat them to within an inch of their last breath or cut off their fingers so that they can not use a computer keyboard anymore!!!

Very true... there are probably millions of users out there that would be very surprised to find out what all their own computers are spewing out without them even knowing about it. Of course they do wonder why their computers act so strangely and run so slowly these days.
