    Linux/BSD/Unix Forums

    <<<Excluding this forum of course>>>

I am NOT going to mention any specific forum, that is not my point. But I have noticed lately that many Linux/BSD/Unix type forums are getting really strange. Some are very rude, some try to be over organized that it is almost painful, some are not newbie friendly at all, some are just not friendly period.

I am not really sure what has happened. I understand the occasional person being a jerk or rude but I am seeing it more with some moderators as well. I was so frustrated that I just gave up on forums and simply Googled for answers. If things where bad enough before I would then go back to Windows for several months at least then try it all again. I am familiar with Linux, I feel bad for those who are new and experience this and decide it is not worth the headaches and never try Linux/BSD/*Nix again.

Again, I do like this forum. I have not experienced any of the above here... Yet? lol

    Thanks for that!

We do try our best to keep it friendly here but occasionally someone will come along that simply refuses to cooperate. That said, forums can often be a bit like distributions, in that you might have to try a few of them before you find the one that best suits your own personal tastes. Another similarity to distributions might be how some forums are far more new user friendly than others. I've found myself joining a lot of different forums over the years, but I rarely hang out at any that don't feel right for me.

Best of luck to you with any forums that you have already joined, or might join in the future.

We do try to be tolerant here - there are a lot of different folks from many different cultures and backgrounds that post. We try to keep the "gnarlies" to The Coffee Lounge. We can rant a bit here, keeping within some limits. The main forums however are intended for helping people solve their problems. Sometimes the questions are unclear, seemingly boneheaded (sic), or just irritating; however, I think they wouldn't be asking them if they didn't have a real problem that is vexing them somewhat. So, I try to sit back and consider what they are saying, and follow up with some hopefully pertinent questions of my own until I have a clear (to me at least) understanding of their problem. We can't always help (notice the older postings with 0 replies), but I try to go back to those in a few days (or longer) and reconsider what they are saying. Sometimes just letting some time go by helps clarify my thinking about the topic.

Anyway, welcome to The Linux Forums.

Thanks ozar, Rubberman, I am liking this forum. I will answer posts when I can, if I can actually help (hopefully I know what I am talking about when I answer them, lol)

I think all linux forums in general will grow in the near future. There seems to be major landmarks (distro's in particular) that seem to advance things in some way. Ubuntu came along, for example, and changed things a bit. I think one or two distro's are now based on it So I think there will be a great leap from somewhere in the near future, which will end up increasing all linux type forums. I have to wonder if Google's Chromium OS will be that big change. Or maybe Microsoft will go open source. Or just maybe Apple will give something real back to the BSD community.... Ok, the last two are over tired delusions, never mind
