Discussion question: Why use wine when you can use virtualbox?
I've been struggling a lot getting things to work right with wine, and dealing with dual booting is frustrating... are there disadvantages to running windows in a virtualbox instead of using wine? Or why do you use wine instead of running a virtualbox?

TBH never even tried to use Wine.
I have VMware installed and it just seems so much handier. If virtual box is a good openSource alternative to VMware then I'd suggest using it.

Well for starters you don't need a Windows licence

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

That i figured being the most obvious reason, but aside from that? i've noticed that getting hardware to work in a virtual box for advanced 3d gaming or that sort of thing can be kind or touchy, but for reasons like netflix watch instantly, or other less hardware intensive applications, it seems to work pretty well, and i have a pretty old outdated system with a fast processor.
i'm running with 512 mb ram clocked at 533mhz and 8mb of shared memory for video ram, and that's onboard video not a video card and it seems to work pretty well.

The virtualbox setup is superior, if you have a bunch of disk space (5+ GB, more recommended) and can live with the thought of losing the whole (virtual) machine (which I did twice, since I like to screw around).
Some things just won't run in wine, but the things that do are really convenient to have fairly instantly.
Virtualbox is getting better, but my dual-boot just works (inconveniently). If you've got the disk real estate, it's fun to have a Virtualbox around.
