ubuntu 10.04
I am assuming, since I am new at this; that ubuntu is a linux based system. I have tried to install it under windows 7 ultimate and just before the installation is complete..I get an error message ststing permission denied. It tells me look for the log file but it is never there. What am I doing wrong. Also, I have three files that I need to expand (extract), with the extension(s) of .7Z, Tar.BZ2, and Tar.BZ_use_mirror_Garr.
What do I need to accomplish this task and can someone direct me to the sight(s) obtain the proper program(s). Thank you for your time..

Hello and Welcome!

How are you trying to install Ubuntu?
Are you making a dual boot system? If so, then after burning the ISO image, you should just be able to drop the disc in the cup-holder and reboot your computer.Jay

You're correct.
There are a number of ways to install Ubuntu on a Windows system. Are you trying to set up a dual-boot where each OS has its own partition on your harddrive, or are you installing it on the Windows partition using the Windows Ubuntu Installer (WUBI)?I have tried to install it under windows 7 ultimate and just before the installation is complete..I get an error message ststing permission denied.
I'm not sure where this came from, since I've never had to extract tarballs to get Ubuntu installed. Could you elaborate? It tells me look for the log file but it is never there. What am I doing wrong. Also, I have three files that I need to expand (extract), with the extension(s) of .7Z, Tar.BZ2, and Tar.BZ_use_mirror_Garr.Registered Linux user #270181

Next question. How do I get, and I have a dell laptop with built in wifi, to the internet? I looked at several things but could not figure out how to setup a connection to the internet. Are there drivers I need to install or is there a download I need to get? Thanking you ahead of time for your time and help.

Have a look at System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers to see if there are any you need to install. If there are none to install (or after they are installed) you should see a Network Manager icon near the top right of the screen. Click on that and you should see a list of networks.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.
