Hi, just joined. Have used Linux before but never set it up myself. Want to build a 'barebones' system (perhaps a Shuttle SG41J1 PLUS). Will investigate first whether this could be successful. If I get stuck I'd like to come here and ask questions .
    Cheers,

Welcome aboard, QF! Enjoy your stay.

I have recently built a new Mini-ITX* system consisting of:
    -Intel DG45FC Motherboard
    -Antec ISK 310-150 Case
-Some ram, a dual core CPU and a SSD

Installed Debian GNU/Linux Unstable on it and are highly satisfied with it.

*: One has to wonder why Mini is smaller than Micro.
Debian GNU/Linux -- You know you want it.

    Thanks for the welcome !
I see, there are plenty of options to build a barebones system. Will now need to investigate even more.
    Cheers,

    Hi and welcome dude !

For a minimal system I will recommend to you ArchLinux, Gentoo, Debian or if you are a little bit crazy but fearless see LFS (Linux From Scratch).
