New to Linux
Hello, I am new to Linux and would like to ask a couple of questions if I may? I will try and keep this short and I would like to thank any one who helps ahead of time. I am taking a Linux course at college and I am supposed to join a Linux forum and ask a couple of questions about Linux so here goes , 1. As I stated I am new to Linux and would like to know as a newbie to Linux is there any certain one I should use that would benefit me more than the others? 2. is there anything i can do to become better on linux other than what i am doing now by asking questions and getting a linux program and getting my hands dirty?
Thanks again for any help or input. I am asking questions for a class but more importantly for me to learn and get better with Linux.

Welcome! The above books are what I found in my library to have been the most help to me in the beginning.
Ask for distro recommendtions and confusion will ensue due to the plethora of answers.
It partly depends on your machine and your learning style.
The Three Giants of Linux | Linux Magazine and
Linux is NOT Windows are good intros, too

Abuse the command line, if appropriate for your course, attempt to run without a graphical interface (not always appropriate)
learn to use man files
if i want to know what the command 'shutdown' does and how to use it
(to exit, press 'q')Code:man shutdown

Hello and Welcome!

1) Look here... there is some great info there, including a couple of quizzes that may help you pick a good starter distro.
2) LiveCD's will definitely be a boon. Play with it, break it. Reboot and all is good. After that, make a 10 or 15 GB partition, install it and have a ball!
There are many methods by which you can learn... mine has always been by doing.
Take that for what you will.
Good luck, though. And if you have any specific questions... here we be!
