    Lightbulb Just a thought

OK, I'm not exactly a master at Linux, Theres three deviations out there I like. Open Suse, Mint and PCLinuxOS. All look fantastic, Mint and Open Suse have a great looking, easy to use start menu. PCLinux, well it's bland.

The file system is slightly less complicated in Mint, The Control Panel was much more feature packed and easier to navigate in Open Suse, and kinda basic in PCLinux.

So now this is my thought, Why wouldn't Linux take the best features from all of there best Distro's and put them in one Distro? And why wouldn't they drop Dolphin and Conquerer as the system browser? There bland and Dolphin is horrably ugly, both browsers are unstable and not very good at what I wish for them to do.

Firefox, seems a little buggy to me as a browser for both system and internet, never seemed to like it. But there is one that has both the looks and functionality, on top of speed and convieniance, Opera! would be so much better for the average person to use. It looks better and My Documants would be set up like speed dial, 4 unchangeable buttons, Music , Movies, Pictures and downloaded content, along with another 5 buttons to set as desired.

Give Windows a grusome wakeup call and lets put Mac in there place! Lets make an ultra fast Distro, one that isn't afraid of compatability issues. And last but not least One that comes with a new and improved multimedia player that can compete with anything Windows or Mac can make.

One great thing about konquerer is that I can directly access my university filestore (as though I were looking at files on my computer) with it really easily using fish:// so even though I can't see much point to it otherwise (except beginning with a k... kfirefox just wouldn't work, kopera sounds... well I don't even wanna say ) it does have that in its favour.

Exactly. Konqueror is a file manager first and a web browser second, and the integration is what makes it useful. KDE in general is designed for former Windows users, and konqueror is designed to have a similar functionality to Windows explorer (and ever since XP's SP3 and IE8, konqueror officially has better integration, for better or worse), but more flexible. One interface supports local file browsing incl. archives, SMB, OBEX (BlueTooth), http, ftp, and whatever other protocol you plug in support for. Very handy, and an integral part of KDE.

For an actual primary web browser, I use Firefox because of the plugins interface (adblock+, noscript, flashgot...), crash resume, and just all over predictable behavior. I also use Opera for the few sites that don't deal well with my restricted firefox.

My default media player is xmms for local audio and VLC for everything else. Issues are few.

Simple, because everyone has a different definition of what the "best features" are. For me, the best feature of Firefox is the ability to run plug-ins like Adblock Plus. For others, the "best feature" of Google's Chrome browser is the ability for each tab to run as its own separate process. You'll never be able to please everyone.

That being said, nothing's stopping you from picking and choosing the best features for you and releasing some sort of hybrid browser tailored to your needs. Provided all the code is GPLed, you can mix and match however you like.

    Hello and welcome!

TechieMoe's reply is exactly what I was about to say, so I'll leave it at that except to say that until someone can actually decide what the best features are for everyone your objective will never be achieved, although you could satisfy yourself by building your own as suggested above.

Good luck with it if you should decide to tackle it.

I'm starting to understand the beauty of linux. I love firefox, can live with Opera, but dislike Konquerer. Fortunately we can all have what we like.

In Windows, Windows Explorer is both the file manager and internet browser, Konqurer is like that but lacks in the internet departmant. I'm talking about making a real customizable distro that centers on wiping the floor with microsoft.

Let's face it, the average Linux user won't be into the hardcore stuff you guys are into. A simple drawn out OS with snappy looks and an easy to use file system, dumping terminal into the past, but not all together. Terminal is good only if you know how to use it, wich the average Joe like me doesnt.

Compatability has been the biggest problem since I started goofing with Linux. I wanna use my Computer as a Media Center, for games that ousts Linux, for Video and Music , if I use XBMC, I am good. Using my MP3 Player with Linux is a seemingly daunting task, I hate having to play with settings.

I want an easy lightwieght system thats fast and powerful, can take my MP3 player and set parameters by itself like when you plug one into windows. Has a better than MPlayer media player and beable to take on Call of Duty like games.
Internet, file manager, Pictures and video/audio should run seemlessly and not be hard to figure out, and the graphics need a definitive boost. Lets face it, none of this linux stuff is as nice looking as Windows untill KDE.

I'm just guessing here, but I reckon that you weren't born with the genetic knowledge of how to use Windows either. Linux is different to Windows (I would passionately argue better) and therefore it will come with a learning curve.

I don't see the problem. If Windows is what works for you then why not use it?

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

You say that Linux doesn't look as good as Windows? Try using Compiz, which gives you a 3D-esque desktop, or something like Evolution 17.

A better media player than MPlayer? Howso? You have tons of media player choices on Linux: I personally use VLC, but mplayer is great for other things. "Better" is a hard thing to quantify, but I personally can't stand using Windows Media Player or Quicktime anymore, because Linux players always seem so much more powerful to me.

Also, about hardware compatibility: hardware vendors tend not to support Linux. So we have to figure things out on our own and provide our own support. It is amazing what a group of volunteers have been able to accomplish so far, and I have seen amazing advances in hardware auto-detection and support. Yes, some hardware is not supported, but this is because hardware vendors don't want to support Linux, not the other way around.

You also seem to misunderstand something about Linux. Linux isn't about wiping the floor with Microsoft. Linux is about making the best OS for those that use it. You'll find that most Linux users eventually become very comfortable with the console and become better users for it. Linux is also about choice: if you don't like Firefox, then don't use it. Download Opera: it runs on Linux. No one is stopping you.

Using Windows is like going to dinner at your bosses house. You have no or little choice, you eat what they serve. Linux is like going to an all you can eat buffet. You can pick and choose from what looks good, even pick several main courses. If you get something you don't like, you get a clean plate, and go make another selection. The biggest problem is deciding on what you want, and you keep thinking that something else may be better. In the end you like most of it and wind up grossly overeating.
