    .exe files are for windows.
They do not run natively on linux.

*some*, -not all- can be run via a program called wine
    WineHQ - Wine Application Database

Another approach is to run a virtualized or dualboot windows.

Or you find a native linux program for your task

Linux distro's usualy work differently to Windows and one area that many new users find strange is installing software. As a Windows user, you will be used to downloading software from the Internet and installing it. In the Linux world, most software is installed from a trusted source called a repository. In Ubuntu, there are a couple of GUI ways to access their repository.

The first is the "Ubuntu Software Centre" and the second is Synaptic, which isn't quite as pretty but gives more details on low level software. Have a look in the Ubuntu Software Center and search for the type of software you are looking for.

This will seem strange but will grow on you

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

You can install a plugin for Firefox called Download Helper.
DownloadHelper - Media download Firefox extension
After you install it you can go to preferences and set it to convert your videos to other formats.

Alternatively, you can install WinFF or Handbrake from the repository.
With Handbrake you will need to add the ppa to your sources list.
They have instructions on their website on how to do this.

Much better to use the repos then to download Windows exe files then hope they work in wine.
    Also much safer.
