    Smile I'm also new!

Hi. I'm known as Nigel ^ to my friends and I'm also new!

I'm new to both the linuxforums.org forums and to GNU-Linux.

I've been using GNU-Linux for about a year, having got sick and tired of Windows, after running Cygwin.

At the time of this post, I'm running Debian 5.05 and Fedora 13 "Goddard" on Sun/ Oracle VirtualBox on a Windows XP rig. The reason for this is that it's not my PC and I can't afford to buy a new one, though I've got about ZAR R3500 saved as of this post ...

I'm planning to run another ~20 distros as well, so that I can find the distro (if any) that's right for me. I've been using Windows for about 10 years, so I tent towards using a GUI. However, I've been programming for about 4 years (Java, VB .NET, C#), so I'm also a fan of the bash shell.

I'm in the process of fully migrating to GNU-Linux from Windows because I'm sick of Windows and because GNU-Linux (among other things)

    01. has multiple powerful and scriptable shells
    02. is highly configurable
    03. can run without a GUI ; GUIs are unnecessary for some tasks (such as copying and deleting files)
    04. supports multiple scripting and programming languages
    05. has really powerful and interlinkable tools
    06. is FREE/ opensource !
    07. has better software than Windows and a larger variety of apps to choose from
    08. is targeted by fewer malware/ virus writers than Windows
    09. has file-specific and directory-specific permissions/ security
    10. doesn't require a reboot any time a service (daemon) is installed/ updated/ stopped/ started
    11. has a larger and more savy support community (forums, mailing lists, news groups, etc) than Windows

    ^ not my real name.

Thank you, MasonTX. Much appreciated. I think your posts have been helpful to me previously, although not by your direct responses. Respect!
