    A brave new venture

Hello other members of the linux forums community.

I am Jamie Lowe and an avid user of Ubuntu and a distro fiddler. (Whatever that means?) I was going to introduce myself as is the way of this part of the forums but i thought I'd cut to the chase. Ive been using ubuntu and other distros of linux for 2 years now on an off, and as of late I've intensified my usage due to my passion for the OS. This is because my uni course is starting soon and I want to specialise in Linux based languages because im doing programming as is part of my computer science degree. My issue is, I need to do the more advanced parts of linux or distro there within that will give me extensive experience in it. My problem is that I don't know where to start to up that knowledge.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    Hello and welcome!

Based on what you said above, Linux From Scratch might be a good place to start:

When you figure it out, work on a Distro with Conexant Audio Drivers. They are somewhat lacking in the Linux World, atleast for a Presario v6719NR.

Just kidding! Welcome to the Forums.

I tend to use Ubuntu on my fiddling gigs. Requires less tuning.

Gentoo, Arch or Linux from Scratch will teach you just about everything there is to know about the inner workings of Linux. They're not for the faint of heart, or people without a lot of free time.

Admitidally i dont have a lot of tha time of which u speak but this is something im rather passionate about and am most likely to stick to it once i get started. ATM im working towards microsoft certs for an IT job im after. In theory this basic understanding of windows servers and functionality (I understand windows front end does most of this for you) will then lead me onto linux admin if im lucky enough. ............... perhaps anyways

Just wanna throw an opinion into the fray here.

When you say, "Linux languages", that's a bit of a misnomer.
Because most programming languages aren't specific to any particular OS.
That's done by the API of a specific OS.
For instance, if you were learning C(or any flavor of it), the inner workings of the language are the same for Linux as they are for win32.
The API and HAL layers are where the OS specifics come into play.

So if you want to dive deep into Linux where coding is concerned, you're probly looking more at kernel development than general programming for applications.

Of course, this is just my $0.02 on it as a non-coder.
I'm sure someone else can expand on this concept.

Apologies, may language was somewhat poorly written in my explanation of my issue. I do understand languages such C, C++ and Python are independent of OS and do need to specified to the OS your are programming for. But, I am looking to start programming for Linux using the OS specific and API's in the future. I do hope that I can someday make this a reality.
