    Exclamation Strange Dilemma

    Friends,

    ( Please bear me for next 5-10 minutes. )

    It's been close to 4 years I had started using Linux with RHEL4.X and falling love with it day by day. Everything has been 'so far so good' with the continuous adventures with Fedora 11, 12, OpenSuse 11.1 , 11.2 and now Mint 9.

    But now at this stage sometimes I feel or rather wander that I'm more or less dependent on particular package management systems for everything / everytime I need. First few years it was "yum" , then it became "yast" and now it's been "apt-get" from a month or so.
    I know it may sound strange but that's my dilemma. Please pour in your sincere advice to the confused young boy if it's time to switch to a more geeky and troublesome distro.
    (I don't like this term distro, for me everything is a Linux OS, Red-hat to Ubuntu to tiny core )

    { PS : I've been a distro-hopper and I feel I'm biased towards RH based bistros, but actually I don't want to be. I want to settle down now.
    I have a Slackware 13.1 dvd, I just prepared, tried installing but Lilo error came up shouting. I have Vector 6.0 Classic KDE too, loved the live cd experience }

    Why don't you like packet managers? They're one of the things that make Linux so much better than Windows. Even "geeky" source-based distros like Gentoo and Crux use them. After all, one of the problems with open-source is that existing libraries keep getting reused by new packages, so you have the dependency problem; how are you going to handle that without an intelligent package manager?

    I suppose if you're a real masochist, you could try Linux from Scratch.

    Hey Hazel, I've been following you're QAs from a long in the forum.

    Errr...you took me wrong , my bad, I guess I failed to make my dilemma clear.
    First of all I'm not a real geek, just a Linux enthusiast, love exploring. When I started with RHEL 4 when yum was not even being introduced to me, atleast. So I can understand how important and lovely this thingie had been to me for years against the dependency problems we all used to face.
    I think my concern is not actual one can call a "real" problem, it's just a state of mind, I thought of sharing and seeking a bit of advice from my online Linux family.

    I never said I don't like package managers, my friend, I would never say that .
    I appreciate your honest views Hazel. I guess it's time to organize my thoughts.

    PS: working on LFS as virtual machine already, big hassle :P
