Flux atm. I'll check out E soon (to get lordnothing off my back ). I'd rather fix everything that's broken now and then install E and attempt to break more stuff.

since it's hard to compare desktop environments to window managers, i'll say KDE for a desktop environment and fluxbox for a window manager. but i use fluxbox as my primary gui.

if you're going to include window managers in addition to desktop environments, what happened to enlightenment, window maker, and icewm?! i like/use those as well.

I'm using GNOME 2.8 on Gentoo.

I may well think that both GNOME and KDE are really too heavy for me to use, considering that I use very few of their actual functions and programs, and I have several times considered to drop them and just use Sawfish.

However, I just really like GNOME. It's always useful to have a few panels with some CPU monitors and so on. And it's fun to play around with once in a while -- the DNS-SD and mDNS functions in GNOME 2.8 are great fun! =) It's also good that I stay a little in touch with these things to the times that I have to help people out with them.

I don't like KDE at all, on the other hand. It uses QT, is written in C++, and does a lot of annoying things that break UNIX semantics, like changing the process title, forking and terminating on startup, and so on. No KDE for me!

I use KDE. I think it looks the best. Let's face it, it looks great.

I think it also has the best and most stable apps. For example, Kontact has crashed on me exactly zero times, whereas evolution crashes on my about once an month. Same thing with Rythymbox vs Aramok. B/c my music resides on a different computer, if I try to run Rythymbox w/out the network mounted, it will nearly destroy my system, requiring me to do a hard reset, run fsck and delete some lock files that it leaves laying around after I restart. Aramok handles it much more gracefully, simply telling me that I have no music. Ksmoothdock is awesome. kwifimanager is great, too. It easily allows for quick switching between access points, rather then reconfiguring my system everytime. klaptop is the best for configuring power management.

I know a lot of people that say that KDE is bloated, and granted it is, but it's still not as bloated Windows.

If I'm in the mood for a full desktop environment, I use KDE. If I just want something to run my commands (but still need X, such as when I'm gaming) I use Blackbox WM. KDE 3.3 rocks.
