    Linux to the rescue again.

One of the office computers suddenly got the BSOD and shut down. Attempts to reboot crashed about 30 seconds after logging onto the desktop. Our part time tech guy declared that it was overheating, and that we would have to get a new computer. I slipped in a live disk and the computer came back to life and ran fine for 1 1/2 hours, showing a hard drive temp of 38 degrees. Reboot to windows, it crashed again. When I told them what I had found out, they brought the install disk over and I reinstalled windows (repair didn't work), problem solved. If not for the linux live disk, we would have been buying a new computer. Score one for linux.

and you probably secretly annoyed the tech guy

it happens when they don't know linux
microsoft based training is a bit limited
and most of the pc repair courses focus on only pc's
and they do not focus on server or other hardware.

as stated by many linux techs and gurus (you will learn far more about your computer from linux than anything else0

To be fair to the tech guy, we are a small sheriffs office, and our tech guy is the chief deputy. He was appointed to the job because in his early days in law enforcement he moonlighted as a copier repair person. He does fine as long as the problem is adding a new part or replacing an old one. Mostly he just maintains the records of what we have and where it is, updates software, prepares proposals for new equipment.

point him to the linux forums here and linuxinternationals.org
we will be happy to help in any way we can
I for example have had around 35 years experience in computer repair and programming.
I currently do industrial programming and some computer forensics
but I am not the only one! there are a lot of people who know more about linux
( I am in my 5 year of linux).

Every time I try to talk linux around him, he gives me a look like "What planet are you from?" Maybe someday he will get unbusy enough to get curious.
