    Hello from Missouri

Hi all. I make bath and body products and soaps. I use my computer to keep up to date in my field, participate in forums, research, and in my down time, play games. I have become disappointed with MS products, I'm running Vista. As far as I'm concerned '98 was perfectly fine for me. But I was forced to go to xp and now vista... I'm not going to 7. I absolutely refuse.

I haven't had sound on my laptop for about 2 years now. None of the fixes MS offers has made a difference. So I ordered some PClinux discs to try kde, gnome and they have a disc that compares the two.... but I can't HEAR it!!! So I've been bummed and just don't know what to do. I'm not a techie but I've used unix back in the good 'ol days... back in the days of windows 3.1. I really liked the command line prompts and hope some day soon to reacquaint myself with it.

Any suggestions anyone would like to offer would be appreciated. TIA

Welcome to the forum. Have you tried your notebooks website for updates to the sound program? Also, try downloading Ubuntu from distrowatch.com or look at the other linux distro's available there. What are our notebook brand and specs?

The only windows system I liked also, not very secure but...

Who is the "they" you are referring to? The PCLinux site? Are you sure it is not a hardware problem? What laptop do your have? Manufacturer, hardware specs including sound card/onboard sound?

Thanks for your replies. I have an hp pavillion dv6226, intel pentium 1.60GHz, 1gb ram, vista home premium service pak 2, 32 bit os.

@MASONTX: I've tried all of hp's recommended fixes... i've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, and i've tried all the fixes ms recommended.

I don't think it is a hardware problem because the sound was working fine just before a ms windows update was applied... haven't heard a peep since then (or a beep for that matter).

@yanck: the they i ordered from was dvdxdvd through amazon.com and i have conexant hd audio.

Not sure i'm using the correct terminology but I hope this makes sense.

Call me crazy (by the way Howdy and Welcome)

But I read on the EEEPC Forum. A thread about dead sound on Windows .

Come to find out. Yahoo Messenger is what killed his sound and it wouldn't fix until he used Revo Uninstaller to fix it. Just in case.

If you post the problem in the forum it would be more appropriate to deal with it there. Welcome to the forum, anyway.
