USB Device Naming Issue on Blade Servers
Hello Everyone,
In Linux, when it comes to device naming, I understand that the HDD's are given 1st preference, 2nd comes the CD ROM and then the external devices (USB .. etc).
Is it true? Correct me, if I am wrong
In DPM Hardware, since it contains only 1 Hard Disk internally, the device naming for USB is taken as sdb1, no matter, whether we login into the OS present in the system (OR) you boot into the USB stick
But, it is not the case with IBM / HP Blades. The naming convention is getting chnaged when we boot into OS and when booted into the USB directly. It shows sdc1 when booted into OS and sb1 when booted into USB directly
Blades have 2 HDD internally and hence on some blades, the naming convention for USB is detected as sdc1 and on some blades, it is taken as sdd1
Consider the following real time scenario - Installing a RHEL OS via USB on IBM Blades with no Operating System present
In this case, we are unable to provide the correct USB device name, when trying to perform the OS Installation from USB grub.conf file
Kindly help me in this regard. Your response at the earliest is highly appreciated
Thanks,
