    Hello and welcome zakzak257!

The first step perhaps is to choose a distribution (distro) that you would like to use. You can read more of that from here.

Download an ISO image. Your choice, CD or USB and have it installed.

The learning part can come as you play along with what you have.

You can then post here in the forums and ask for help as you encounter problems along the way. You'll be a guru in no time, I believe!

Welcome to the forums. Ubuntu is a great place to start, then play with different distro's as live CD's. Have fun!

9.10 is good if you have it installed.

I don't think you said which version you were running. Yes, 9.10 is Karmic Koala, 9.04 is Jaunty Jackalope, and 10.04 is Lucid Lynx. Some of the cute animal names that Canonical gives their Ubuntu distributions. However, even though many things have changed between 9.04 and 10.04, the differences between 9.10 and 10.04 are, as I understand it, mostly under the covers. The book should still help you get going more effectively.
