    Question about functional English

I am preparing a presentation to introduce linux to my classmates, however, I have problem about some names:
If I buy a new laptop I will make most of the warranty period and run a lot of appliction on it day after day, torture the machine to test it.
How you English guys name it?This kind of torturing I mean.

You could call it a "torture test"
or some might refer to it as an "acid test".

Initial testing of new equipment is also sometimes
    called "burn in".

Stress test is the term I hear most often to describe the testing you propose, EXCEPT 'scientific' stress testing usually involves known test software and tools that measure the stress level and the CPU/GPU/RAM/cache/etc. performance under stress.

With the test scenario you propose, at least as I understand it, you won't know if you've stressed the computer hardware or if the software programs you're running don't play well together or require more resources than they're allowed, or are just buggy and fail under certain conditions.

You may be able to find suggestions for a more controlled test setup by Googling "stress test."

Let us know how it turns out.

    Welcome to the forums!

If you need any utilities to stress test your system, you can use something like StressLinux or Phoronix Test Suite:

    Stresslinux

    Phoronix Test Suite

Of course, there are other alternatives should you need or want them.

When you test a machine (or even an application) for its performance you normally call it a stress test. But if you measure the data and if applicable compare them to other machine's data it's called a "benchmark".
