    Welcome to the forums!

    Pick a programming/scripting language or two and start learning them. You can find mounds of free tutorials and information about Linux programming and scripting with some online searching. You can also examine open source code to see how others have done it. Post questions in our Linux Programming & Scripting Forum should you run into difficulties with your own programming and scripting.

    There's a book called "Linux Device Drivers" you may want to look into. I haven't gotten around to it myself, but I've ran across it (in searches and suggestions) quite often.
