    Back to the thirties

I saw something yesterday that depressed me. I was just coming back from the park with my dog when I saw some people filling up the pavement. When I got closer, I saw that it was a long queue snaking around the corner of a building.

I walked up to the head of it and saw a woman wearing a fixed robotic smile and some kind of company uniform. I asked her what was going on and she said they had advertised some jobs.

There must have been about 200 people in that queue, mostly Asians. They were obviously desperate to get those jobs. I've seen things like this in 1930s newsreels but I never thought I would see it in real life.

This brings to mind the old saying, "desperate times call for desperate measures".

Hopefully, they all were able to get a job.

Hazel, you're not the only one to see parellels with the 30's. Many economists are finding comparisons between now and the 30's.

Yes, indeed! And what came after the Thirties?

BTW, not all will find jobs -- that's why the long line (er, queue, 'scuse me!).

You want security? work in a prison.

I think politicians will always try to redirect the anger of an unsatisfied population to a real or manufactured external source rather than change their own behavior.

When they have " job fairs " here in New York City it is almost necessary to call out the police riot squads to control the overflow crowds.
There are, unfortunately, just lots of people looking for work nowadays!!!

I didn't catch who put out the statement, but the news claimed that we were technically out of recession in the fall of 2009. Anyone feeling like we are out of the recession?
